“There is no need for signs to Roscigno Vecchia, an abandoned village 1,200 feet up a mountain in the Cilento national park, in southern Italy.
Most of its residents deserted the modest hamlet a lifetime ago, in 1964, when malaria, which still existed in Italy, struck homes in the marshy lower quarter.
Today the village has just one remaining inhabitant, who has lived there, completely alone, for 15 years.”
